INTERVENTION: In The Name of Peace, Freedom & Democracy

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In the name of peace and freedom, America has shaped the political histories of many of the world’s existing countries. From the human rights abuses of the School of the Americas, to the fractured campaigns in Vietnam, to the murder of over 2 million citizens in Cambodia, our government has had a major hand in global dominance through tactics of coercion intimidation, and downright deception.

CONVERSATIONS WITH REMARKABLE MINDS

Prof Harvey Cox: the Hollis Professor at Harvard Divinity School, the oldest professorship at Harvard dating back to 1721.  He has taught there since 1965 & just recently retired at age 80.  He resurrected a long lost tradition that permits the Hollis professor to own a cow to graze in the Harvard yard; his retirement ceremony included “Faith” the cow.  Prof Cox has been one of the most important liberal theologians during the last half century &  a leading trend spotter in American religion.  He has also been a prominent civil rights & anti-war activist throughout his career.  Forty years ago “The Secular City” predicted much of what we see unfolding in society today- dogmatic religious beliefs giving way to secular values more in consort with the higher spiritual values of religion; even then, he viewed this as a maturing of humanity, a divine gift, not a threat to religion. “The Future of Faith: The Rise and Fall of Beliefs and the Coming Age of Spirit”

Wendell Berry: one of America’s most recognized “men of letters”, & a pioneer of organic, sustainable agriculture in our modern age.  What Wendell wrote about almost 40 years ago, is now the norm among environmental opponents of big agriculture & the food industry. As the grandfather of the ‘Slow Food Movement’, his philosophy & inspired stories of land, agriculture & food have been a muse for folks like Bill McKibben, Michael Pollan & Barbara Kingsover.
