Lester Brown has been called “one of the world’s most influential thinkers” today. In India, he is known as the “guru of the environmental movement”. While living in rural India, he became intimately familiar with the relationship between population & food supply. In the 60’s, he served as an international advisor to the Secretary of Agriculture; In 1974, he founded the Worldwatch Institute, the influential watch organization on global environmental issues and the publisher of the State of the World and World Watch reports. In 2001, he founded the Earth Policy Institute, devoted to the creation of a road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable society and economy. Brown has authored and co-authored 50 books, translated in over 40 languages. He has now received over 40 honorary degrees and awards.
In his most recent work, “Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization”(2009), Brown argues that food may be the issue that convinces the world of the need to cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2020. Every major environmental trend from climate change to deforestation and water scarcity affect food supplies. He focuses on details of the plan and how it is already emerging in the energy economy.
